This lyric from an old popular song tells of a soul who, despite having the opportunity to change course, chooses to go it alone in a world of hurt and loneliness. It’s a tough place to be—and unfortunately, it’s a path some people find themselves on in their spiritual journey too.
I saved this post for last because it deals with something emotionally heavy. The sad truth is, some souls stop just short of their breakthrough. They don’t stop because they lack desire or willpower. Instead, they hit a spiritual wall — a place in their journey where the challenges feel too overwhelming, and they choose to give up.
But here’s the kicker: It’s not that they want to abandon their faith. It’s that they believe their faith no longer works. So, they make the painful choice to step away from what they know, to give up, and try to find their way without connection or guidance. And when they do that, they are often left alone to figure things out in isolation.
The result? A broken journey. Some even spiral into an existential crisis, feeling like everything they once believed is suddenly irrelevant.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
You don’t have to go it alone. There is a better way forward, and it starts with reaching out for help and seeking the right kind of support.
Why Support Matters
The spiritual life is not a solo mission. While it’s true that the path of growth requires personal effort, it’s also true that we are not meant to walk it alone. Spiritual guides, companions, mentors — these are all key parts of a thriving spiritual journey.
The second half of the spiritual journey, the deeper life where growth is magnified and change becomes more intense, can feel lonely. Those who venture into this phase may find themselves somewhat isolated. This happens because very few take up the invitation to grow further — some stay stuck, and others simply give up.
In fact, studies suggest that a staggering 85% of Christ followers never move past the surface. That’s a lot of people who, for whatever reason, decide not to deepen their connection with God or their spiritual growth. If you’re one of the few who says “yes” to growing deeper, you may find yourself in a small minority, feeling isolated and disconnected from the larger crowd.
But here’s a tip: Don’t look for this level of connection in large groups, crowded rooms, or bustling church services. You won’t find the depth of companionship you’re looking for there.
So, where can you find it?
The souls I know who are experiencing this deeper phase of spiritual life are still finding meaningful connection, but it’s happening on a personal level. They find it in one-on-one conversations. Spiritual companionship, often referred to as spiritual direction, is exactly that — companionship. It’s someone who walks alongside you in the journey, helping you discern and develop your spiritual life.
This might sound intimidating at first, but the truth is, spiritual companionship can transform your journey. It provides not just guidance, but connection, validation, and affirmation. It’s someone to walk with you, not to lead you, but to support you when the road gets tough.
In addition to individual companionship, many people benefit from finding a small group of like-minded souls. People who are also committed to growing spiritually. Together, you can share discoveries, insights, and inspiration. The camaraderie of such a group can make all the difference when you’re walking a path less traveled.
And today? Thanks to online platforms, you can easily find like-minded people anywhere in the world. Virtual meetings, social media groups, and video calls make it easier than ever to connect authentically, even if no local, physical community is available.
Real Christianity has always been deeply relational. In fact, I once heard a pastor put it bluntly: “A lone Christian ain’t no Christian.” He wasn’t being harsh; he was being honest. And this is not a new idea. The early church father Tertullian famously said, “Unus Christianus, nullus Christianus” — “One Christian, no Christian.” The spiritual life is meant to be shared and experienced in community.
When you find authentic connection with others, you’ll feel the relief and courage that comes from knowing you are not alone. You’ll see others walking the same path, modeling the way forward, and telling you “We are doing this, and you can too. We believe in you. Let’s do this together.”
This kind of support isn’t just nice to have. It’s a game changer. It’s what sustains you when you feel like giving up. It’s the source of strength when you think you can’t go any further.
If you’re reading this and feel like you’re on the edge, uncertain about continuing on your spiritual journey alone, I want to encourage you to reach out for support. Don’t wait until you’re at the end of your rope.
Spiritual companionship is available to you. And it could be the key to unlocking the next stage of your journey. Whether it’s through individual guidance or a small group of like-minded souls, the support is out there. You don’t have to go it alone.
