Shift Three: Discover Who You Really Are

Trust me. You are more than you think!

When we start to feel dissatisfaction or a shift in our spiritual life, it’s easy to blame ourselves—thinking something is wrong, that we’re somehow flawed or defective.

But what if this discomfort is not a sign of something wrong with you, but an invitation from God? An invitation to discover who you truly are… and maybe, who you are not.

In great tenderness, God allows the still-wounded places within us to surface. These wounds—emotional scars, limiting beliefs, and compulsions—often form protective patterns that become part of our identity. Over time, these patterns can be so ingrained that we mistake them for who we are. But the truth is, they’re not our true selves.

Your True Self in Christ

Your true self—the person you are in Christ—is wonderful. You are accepted in the Beloved, loved just as you are, and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The glory of Christ in you is a real and tangible hope.

When you begin to truly understand and embrace who you are in Christ, you stop relying on fear-driven defense mechanisms and limiting personality patterns. Instead, you start living from a place of secure knowing.

And here’s the surprising part: the more you come to know and experience how wonderful you truly are in Christ, the less likely you are to ignore the flaws, triggers, and patterns that used to hold you back. In fact, you’ll become more aware of them—without judgment—allowing you to address them with grace.

Self-knowledge: A Spiritual Necessity

As St. Teresa of Avila wisely said, “Self-knowledge is so important that, even if you were raised right up to the heavens, I should like you never to relax your cultivation of it; so long as we are on this earth, nothing matters more to us…”

John Calvin also echoed this truth, “Nearly all the wisdom which we possess, that is to say, true and sound wisdom, consists of two parts: the knowledge of God and of ourselves. …Which one precedes and brings forth the other is not easy to discern.”

The bottom line? The real you—the unmasked, unedited version—is the person Jesus loves. Not the ego-driven image or persona you put on for others, and not just the parts of yourself that are “presentable.” He loves you—the real, vulnerable you.

Why Knowing Yourself Deeply Matters

To know God’s love in a deeper, more transformative way, you must come to know yourself more fully. This includes understanding the patterns that influence your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors—patterns that may have been with you for so long that you’ve started to identify with them.

But here’s the good news: facing these patterns honestly makes you more capable of becoming who you were created to be. It frees you from chronic anxiety, stress, and the negative impact of your triggers. With this freedom, you’ll find it easier to love, accept, forgive, and grow.

As the internal restrictions ease, you’ll find greater freedom to make healthier choices and stop falling into the same old spiritual traps. Eventually, you’ll experience the interior freedom to become everything God created you to be.

Becoming Who You Were Meant to Be

Psychologist Carl Jung once said, “The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.”

This is not just about self-awareness for the sake of awareness. It’s about shedding the old, limiting beliefs and patterns that are no longer helpful so you can step into the fullness of who you were always meant to be.
