Spiritual Direction

What is Spiritual Direction?
Contemplative, incarnational spiritual direction is one person sharing with another person the gentle, but unwavering encouragement to open fully to God’s loving presence, to discern the activity of the Spirit in his or her life, and respond to that activity.

Generally, this gift is offered through a series of conversations between the direction seeker (directee) and a person trained in listening, reflection and discernment who agrees to serve in this role. Many find it serves an integral role of their spiritual formation.

Baseline assumptions of this spiritual practice:

  • God is your true spiritual director, has already been engaged in drawing you toward relationship, and can be trusted to guide your spiritual journey
  • You are created with the innate capabilities to comprehend this guidance personally and directly
  • The capabilities to comprehend God’s guidance can be developed and refined
  • It is often helpful to engage a “spiritual director” as a “co-listener” or “caring other“ to explore, awaken, develop and support those capabilities.

What are some possible benefits?

  • greater awareness of God’s presence, love, and grace in all things
  • deeper connection to your true self, others, and creation
  • learning new spiritual disciplines, prayer, meditation, etc.
  • discerning God’s will in decisions you face
  • renewal or deepening of faith, hope, life’s purpose
  • more silence, serenity, freedom, meaning, and wisdom in your life.
  • support and encouragement in all life’s spiritual struggles with relationships, family, your? work or calling, goals, dreams, loss, illness, recovery, religious teachings, etc.

What can I expect during a session?
We usually begin with a prayer and a period of silent listening for God. The rest of our time will be invested in thoughtful conversation, and perhaps additional pauses for prayer and reflection.  So it looks a lot like “two people talking,” listening for God throughout the conversation, and noticing the movements of the Spirit in the directee’s life
